Buderim Podiatry established a link with Marthakal homeland resources in 2009. We now visit the tiny aboriginal communities on Elcho Island – near Gove and some of far north east Arnhem land, about every 4 months. Ainslie’s last visit was in February, when it was tropically hot and humid.
“This was my second visit to Elcho Island, and I’m now feeling a bit more familiar with the people, places and language/ customs” Ainslie said. “It’s like another country up there, with the remote distances being breached by light air-craft or 4WD’s. The work is rewarding as sometimes you’re the first person who has ever treated the patients feet, and they can be very unsure if it’s going to hurt or not. By time we’ve treated the corns and calluses on their feet, they’re very happy and walk out the door with a big smile”.
